Miracle - The Beginning

My nurse gave me the idea to share on the many miracles that have happened to me since I got sick with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. My definition of a miracle is something that happened that did not result from any active action from me.

First on the list

How I ended up in Gleneagles instead of NUH

Backstory –

I had gone to my GP on the morning of 12th Oct 2021 because I had a headache and fever. My GP decides to do a blood test because he saw I had bruises and suspected dengue.

What I used to do pre getting sick - go to the gym!

Back then it was the norm for me to go to the gym 5 or 6 times a week and the reason why I had huge bruises was because as a result of gym, I’d also go for massages to ease out the tension in my muscles. I went twice instead of the usual one time. Hence the huge bruises. The massage lady said I had a lot of toxins in my body. Who in the world loves pain so much that they would go to get painful massages not once but twice? Me!

That evening around 7.30pm, he whatsapps me the results of the blood test and tells me to go to the A&E straightaway. He didn’t even wait for the official report to be out. My haemoglobin was 5 at that time. It’s a miracle I drove myself to see the GP that morning! My GP advised me to go to NUH because he said they were the most advanced in terms of treatment options.

However, in the confusion and panic of the situation, somehow, we (me and my dad) ended up at Gleneagles A&E. My dad was the driver and he made a last minute detour and turned into Gleneagles as a hunch because it was closer to my home.

Why is this a miracle?

The power of a detour!
Who did I meet in the A&E?
You need to be attached to a specialist in order to be admitted into hospital.

❤️ Dr Wong who is an Infectious Disease Doctor, was the on-call doctor at that time. He kept asking me many questions about my bruises, how I got them, and other information like me going to the dentist recently because of bleeding gums. He ordered another blood test to be done and I was admitted. The next day, he reveals to me that he thinks he knows my family. I have a unique surname. Turns out my grandfather and his father worked together and were close, in fact, my aunt used to go to their place to tutor them. Talk about divine protection yeah?

❤️ When the blood test results were out, that’s where my current doctor, Dr Lee comes into the picture. Dr Wong became the secondary care doctor and Dr Lee became the primary. It was Dr Lee who came at 9pm and broke the news that most likely I had leukaemia.

❤️ I still wanted to transfer to NUH because my GP kept urging me to go there. However, Dr Lee did a very good job at establishing Doctor – patient trust right from the beginning. The reason why I did not transfer was because I decided that I was comfortable with Dr Lee and the treatment plan that he planned. This really set the tone for the rest of my treatment. I’ve seen my doctor really go over and beyond what he needs to do many times.

❤️ God could have given me a less caring doctor who only cares about the bottom line. But he chose to give me a fellow believer (I only discovered this recently) who truly cares about his patients.

❤️ Even my Infectious Disease Doctor, Dr Wong. I have heard other patients tell me that their ID doctors over gave antibiotics and such. Or that they weren't caring. Thankfully I have no such experience. Dr Wong is the old school kind of doctor who is reliable. He turns up at the same time everyday and was on top on every infection that I got.

This starts the beginning of the many miracles that mark my journey

It wasn't an easy journey but God truly was with me since the beginning.

Stay tuned ok? Thank you!
